How to Check to See if Your Trees Are a Danger
First, perform a safety check of your tree.
Meaning you need to do a target check on your trees that are on your property. In Port St Lucie, FL, there a few older homes, meaning, there are older trees which can often pose a serious threat to a property. Sometimes homeowners will become sentimentally attached to trees, and overlook the fact they can cause damage to nearby properties. We have several people that call our tree service crew to come and look at the trees on their properties to determine if they are safe to keep.
Inspect the tree.
Look at the tree for any sign of damage. Damage can range from dead branches, missing bark, signs of weakness, holes, etc. To properly inspect a tree you need to begin at the trunk and then move upwards.
What to look for?
1. Check for any cuts in or bark that is peeling.
2. Use binoculars when the tree is too high to inspect the tree’s crown for any dead wood or brown leaves.
3. Cracked or heaving soil, especially on the side that is opposite to the lean.
4. Exposed roots at the base of the tree.
5. V-shaped or U-shaped multiple trunks are both weak points for mature trees.
6. Cracks which extend deep into or through the trunk.
7. Reduced or no foliage at all.
8. Premature autumn colors.
9. Mushrooms, carpenter ants, and conks on the base of the tree are all signs of decay and rot.
Warning Be On the Lookout For Oak Wilt
This is an aggressive disease which can affect several species of oak. It is due to a fungal pathogen, called Ceratocystis fagacearum. Red oaks are seriously threatened by it and will perish within weeks, whereas white oaks are not as susceptible, however, will still perish after a couple of years. Oak trees tend to intertwine their roots, which creates an underground pathway for this disease to spread from one tree to another.
